You told me that after her funeral, you all walked back in the rain, to the house in Amador City as a family. Everyone turned up with modest amounts of food, but generous amounts of alcohol. The wake is considered a necessity for anyone in the South. You explained how you didn’t want to sit there with all of those estranged people you felt so distant from. So you walked upstairs to your attic bedroom and turned on ‘My Father’s Gun’. You played it over and over and over again. I zoned out of focus from the conversation for a moment, and I heard the faint hum of Elton John sweep its way through the house; the song had been playing the entire time we had been talking. We sat in silence and listened to it all the way through. I looked at your fingers. They were still.
